Grading Policy
The aim of grading is to place all players from the age groups Under 11 through to and including Under 17 competition teams into “like skilled” teams or groups where they can compete at a level of enjoyment and be competitive in a broad social environment.

Although parents’ opinions are welcome and appreciated they may not always influence the outcome. All decisions made by the Grading Committee will be final.

The grading committee will consist of the Coaching Co-ordinator, Vice President Junior Football and relevant coaches of each age group.

Parents are welcome to attend each grading session.

Grading and skills assessment in competition teams

If there is only one (1) team in each age group, trial matches will be arranged where possible with other clubs to assess both player and team ability. This will greatly assist the club in placing the team in the correct division where each player can play to his/her best ability and be both competitive and able to enjoy the game of soccer.

For teams of each age group which aim to play in the “top” divisions (i.e. 1st or 2nd division), at least 2 trial matches be arranged where possible. The Coaching Co-ordinator and each coach will attend to observe and argue for the placement of these teams into the higher divisions knowing they will be competitive.

U/11 to U/17 Grading

A number of core skills will be assessed to determine each player’s ability. The skills are to be performed in small groups of players, short small sided games and also in a full sided game. Participation by each player in the team will also form part of the assessment.

Skills tests

Skills will firstly be performed in small groups of players:-
  • Passing to another player (6 with left foot, 6 with right foot, 10 metres apart)
  • Passing to another player - pass with left foot, receive with right foot, tap across, pass back left foot (6 times each foot, ball must not stop, 8 metres apart)
  • 3 player lofted passing
    • Centre player passes to outside player, turns
    • Outside player lofts ball to opposite outside player
    • Ball is then passed back to centre player
    • Players swap every 2 mins until they have played in each position
  • Dribble ball through 10 cones then score through a 1.5 metre wide goal (6 times left foot, 6 times right foot, no. of metres = age group i.e. Under 12 = 12 metres, Under 17 = 17 metres)

Small Sided Games

Players are split into 2 separate groups of approximately half normal team size. Two 15 minute games are to be played. Use of the above skills in a small team situation will be assessed. Emphasis is on full player participation in a controlled environment.

Key conditions to be met:-
  • Communication
  • Positional play/movement
  • Cannot score goal for 3 minutes
  • 2 touches of ball before pass
  • 1 minute left foot only

Full Sided Game

Where the number of players is sufficient, a 25 minutes each way game with full competition rules will be played. Use of the skills as listed above will be assessed.

Key points to be assessed:-

Each player will be assessed on “in attack/defence”, how did he/she –
  • Control 1st touch
    • Look up
    • First touch inside or outside of the ball
    • What was first decision?
  • Control of ball
    • Dribble forward
    • Pass ball
    • Go for shot
  • Maintain possession
    • How was possession maintained?
    • Watch the ball, your opponents, goal
    • Pass backwards, square pass, forward
  • If possession is lost
    • Try to regain the ball
    • Screen/shield the ball
    • Protect goal
  • Communication
    • Keep in touch with team mates
    • Organize defence/attack
  • Positional play
    • Maintain position
    • Team structure
    • Keep to game plan
    • Self control
